BACKGROUND
‘Our 200 people’ is an integral part of the initiatives at the heart of Freedom 200’s unique celebrations in 2007; a year that marks 200 years of the Parliamentary Act to abolition slave trade in the UK.
‘Our 200 people’ is a special commemorative hardback publication that profiles 200 people of African origin (African, Caribbean and America) resident in the UK who are outstanding or have attained influential positions in their chosen field. Nominees are being drawn from a broad range of people from diverse fields – professions and civil society - across the UK. The focus on African descent is to reflect the direct link to Freedom from Slavery 200 years ago.
The book will be completed and published in 2008. This inspiring publication would reflect a key legacy of 200 years of freedom.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Eligibility for nomination is based on the following criteria:
- UK Resident
- African origin by birth with a parent from any of this variants; African, Caribbean or Black American
- Currently active in their field of excellence or civil society
- Outstanding achievement of success or overcoming adversity
- A person of good standing in the society with no detrimental public record
- Nominations are welcome from all works of life and civil society
- Other criterion as may be deemed appropriate by the adoption committee.
PROCESS
The selection would be vetted by an adoption committee; their decision is final in all cases.
The book will contain a short profile about each nominee to include:
- A short biography
- An appropriate digital (High Definition) photograph
- A statement of outstanding achievement or status
- An inspiring or remarkable quote from the nominee.
